Julie Andrews Meadow is a stunning alpine destination nestled in American Fork Canyon, accessed via the Timpooneke–Chris’ Flat Trail (#151). The best time to visit is in early summer, when the landscape truly comes alive—reminiscent of Julie Andrews twirling through mountain meadows in The Sound of Music.
Hike to Julie Andrews Meadow – A Scenic Gem in American Fork Canyon
During this time, the grassy fields are vibrant green, wildflowers are in full bloom, and patches of snow linger near the northern end of the Mount Timpanogos ridge. Panoramic views stretch in every direction: to the north, you’ll see the Little Cottonwood Ridgeline; to the east, the beautiful Heber Valley; and to the west, the expanse of Utah County. The scenery is so breathtaking, you’ll be tempted to spin around with your arms wide open, just like Julie.
This trail is perfect for a family-friendly day hike, a scenic picnic adventure, or even a quick overnight backpacking trip for those wanting to enjoy a night under the stars.
When to Visit for the Best Views
Late spring through early summer offers the most vibrant scenery, but fall brings colorful foliage and cooler temps—making it equally worthwhile.

Hiking Julie Andrews Meadow: What to Expect
Start at the Timpooneke Trailhead
The hike begins at the main Timpooneke Trailhead, which is commonly used to access Mount Timpanogos. However, it also serves as a starting point for several other scenic trails. Begin your hike behind the restrooms where you’ll encounter a three-way trail split—take the right path.
Shortly after, you’ll reach another split—this time, stay left.
From here, the trail meanders through a shady grove of tall Aspen trees, providing a welcome respite on warm days.
As you continue, you’ll ascend one small switchback.
Ascend and Cross the Creek
Around the 0.9-mile mark, the trail opens up to a stunning meadow. Cross a small bridge and creek—this is the final water source, so let your dogs hydrate here. Look ahead to the ridge you’ll be hiking toward!
At the first trail junction, go straight up the hill and tackle two short switchbacks.
The next third of a mile is exposed, hot, and rocky, but don’t worry—it gets better.
At the second trail split, turn left and ascend the ridgeline. Be prepared for gusty conditions, as wind often funnels between the surrounding deep canyons.
Climb the Ridgeline
Along the way, enjoy expansive views that are nothing short of jaw-dropping.
Then, prepare for one more hot, exposed section before the trail veers right (west) and leads into a shaded forest.
Enter the Shaded Forest
Some of these trees are dying from a beetle infestation that has affected over 400,000 acres of forest.
Welcome to Julie Andrews Meadow
At approximately 2.1 miles, you’ll arrive at Julie Andrews Meadow. We reached it in about an hour at a relaxed pace. Remember to glance back as you approach—the view from the south is especially breathtaking.
Your four-legged hiking buddy will love it too—Charlie couldn’t resist rolling around in the soft, green grass!
While most hikers return the way they came, we opted to make a loop back to the car for a change of scenery.
