The Red Mountain Trail is located in Dammeron Valley, UT not far from Sand Hollow and Gunlock State Parks. Because it’s not actually apart of the state parks and is wilderness area, dogs are allowed off leash. Be sure to start early in the morning so the sand doesn’t burn their paws. The first 1.5 miles of the trail is very boring and uneventful, but what the trail does lead to is amazing. The Red Mountain Overlook looks down into Sand Hollow, and the white and red slick rock with Signal Peak in the Pine Valley Mountains to the East is incredibly beautiful. This trail is great for the whole family, as it only gains a mere 360 ft. It’s a mix of sand and rock, but plenty of shade if you do need a break.
Directions
From St.George, drive north on HWY 18 towards Dammeron Valley for about 15 miles. Turn left at the signed Red Mountain Trail sign. Here’s a driving map.

Ready to soak up the sun on a hike! The trailhead is HUGE. It can fit probably 100 cars and several horse trailers. There is a port-a-potty too.
Large welcome sign as we begin.
The trail is very uneventful the first 1.5 miles.
You’ll be following the fence line as well. You can’t get lost.
At 1 mile, cut through this wooden fence opening, and you’ll now leave the fenced trail.
Continue following the main path and a few cairns here and there.
Continue following The Red Mountain Trail to the overlook. The last 100 yards or so are very sandy.
Wow, what a cool overlook! This is probably in my top 3 overlooks in Utah.
Can’t get over this view with all the white and red slick rock! That’s Sand Hollow State Park below.
What a fun hike! The first half was super boring but the views totally make up for it.
