Hiking to Moss Ledge Waterfall is a short but rewarding adventure in Big Cottonwood Canyon. While it’s less of a traditional trail and more of a light scramble, the payoff is worth it for the stunning views and secluded waterfall.
About the Trail
To begin with, prepare for a quick workout—this hike gains about 450 feet in just 1/3 of a mile. In fact, you’ll likely use all fours at times, as the terrain involves scrambling over rocks and following a faint, unmaintained social trail.”
Moreover, the beauty of this route is its flexibility. There’s no defined path—just follow the creek uphill, and you’ll eventually reach Moss Ledge Waterfall. It’s a perfect after-work hike or a great addition to nearby trails like Lake Blanche. If you’re short on time, you can pair this hike with another short one like Hidden Falls , both of which can be done in under an hour total.
Note: Big Cottonwood Canyon is part of a protected watershed. This means no dogs and no touching or playing in the water.

Hiking the Moss Ledge Waterfall Trail: What to Expect
The trail starts just west of the mile marker.
You’ll pass a sign warning of no swimming, camping, or dogs, reinforcing the watershed regulations.
Soon after beginning the hike, you’ll reach the lower cascades. Stay to the right and begin scrambling. There’s no “correct” route—just follow the creek and use caution.
I climbed the gulley on the right side of the creek, which offered stable rocks and solid handholds. Always test the rocks before putting your full weight on them.
At one point, I crossed the creek and got my shoes a bit wet. As a result, be warned: the rocks are extremely slick.
As you continue upward, the rocks grow larger.
Nevertheless, don’t worry if you feel like you’ve gone too far—you’ll know you’ve reached Moss Ledge Waterfall when you can’t hike any further and are greeted by a stunning two-tier cascade.
I even climbed a bit higher on dry rock to get a better view—and was pleasantly surprised by the beauty of this hidden gem!
Enjoy the Descent
On your way back down, don’t forget to pause and take in the views behind you. The perspective on the return hike is just as rewarding.
