About

The Baker Lake trail climbs steadily through a mix of forest and open meadows, offering views of rugged peaks before opening up at the shore of Baker Lake. Surrounded by dramatic mountain ridges and often dotted with wildflowers in summer, the lake is a peaceful spot to relax, picnic, or dip your feet in the cool alpine water. Because of its relatively easy access and stunning scenery, this hike is a local favorite for families, casual hikers, and anyone looking to experience Idaho’s high country without committing to a long trek.

Be aware that recent fires have burned this area, leaving zero shade. Despite this, I still found this trail to be oddly pretty with the new green growth and fantastic views! On a Wednesday afternoon, I saw only three other hikers.

Directions

To reach the Baker Lake trailhead from Ketchum, start by heading north on Highway 75 toward Galena Summit. The drive is scenic, following the Big Wood River as the valley narrows and the mountains rise higher around you. Stay on Highway 75 for about 19 miles until you see the turnoff for Baker Creek Road on the left. Turn onto Baker Creek Road and follow it as it winds gently along the creek. The pavement quickly into a maintained dirt road, but it’s usually passable for most vehicles during summer and early fall. Continue on this road for roughly 10 miles until the road ends at the Baker Lake Trailhead. The road narrows in places, so take it slow and watch for oncoming cars. Eventually, the road ends at a small parking area where you’ll find the trailhead. From here, the adventure on foot begins.

Here is a driving map.
