The Norton Lakes Trail is a stunning alpine hike in the Smoky Mountains near Ketchum, Idaho.
About
At about 5 miles roundtrip with a moderate climb, the trail takes you through shady pine forests and colorful meadows before opening up to two sparkling mountain lakes tucked beneath rugged peaks. Wildflowers blanket the hillsides in mid-summer, and the lakes provide a peaceful spot to rest, backpack, or take in the surrounding views. With its mix of accessibility, scenery, and classic Idaho high-country charm, Norton Lakes is a favorite day hike for both locals and visitors.
When I hiked this on a Wednesay afternoon, I only saw 4 other hikers. This would be an excellent base camp for other hikes in the area, including hiking to the Norton Lakes Pass or Norton Peak, or adventuring off-trail to other lakes in the basin.
Directions
To reach the Norton Lake trailhead from Ketchum, start by heading north on Highway 75 toward Galena Summit. The drive is scenic, following the Big Wood River as the valley narrows and the surrounding mountains rise higher. Stay on Highway 75 for about 19 miles until you see the turnoff for Baker Creek Road on the left. Turn onto Baker Creek Road and follow it as it winds gently along the creek. The pavement quickly turns into a maintained dirt road, but it’s usually passable for most vehicles during summer and early fall. Continue on this road for roughly 6 miles and look for the right turn off for Norton Lakes Trailhead. The road narrows in places, so take it slow and watch for oncoming cars.

Hiking the Norton Lakes Trail: What to Expect

Keep an eye out while driving Baker Creek Road. The sign and turn is on the right. Follow this for 1 mile until the end where there is a giant parking lot, port-a-potty, and bridge. The road is well-graded.

After crossing the bridge from the parking lot, take an immediate right. You will gain elevation quickly.

About 15 minutes into the Norton Lakes Trail, you will have amazing views of the creek below.

The trail steadily gains elevation and the jagged ridge comes into view.

It reminded me of a Mini Sawtooth area – so wild to see these rough peaks ahead.

After hiking up one long switchback, the trail levels out briefly.

Eventually you will reach a rocky area – keep an eye out for goats in the cliffs! I only saw one but was unable to get a good, clear photo.

At 2.1 miles you will reach Lower Norton Lake. I was a little disappointed it was so overcast, since the lighting doesn’t capture how clear and blue the water really is.

I highly recommend hiking for another 0.25 miles and 125 ft gain to reach Upper Norton Lakes. Both lakes had several good campsites around it.
