Hiking the Wide Hollow Trail & Herriman Stairs: What to Expect

The brand new Wide Hollow Trailhead parking area is almost done as of February 2026.
Fun Fact: The Wide Hollow Trailhead’s parking lot uses recycled asphalt millings from city roadway maintenance projects. This approach reduces costs and gives a second life to usable materials!

Immediately, you will see the Heriiman Stairs – let the burn begin!

The stairs gradually gain elevation, then get steeper the higher you climb.

That wasn’t too bad! Plus, the view from the top can’t be beat.

Catching our breath before continuing on. Many people opt to do laps up and down the Herriman Stairs, however, we wanted to check out the rest of the trail system a little more.

We turned around after 2 miles, but this was a scenic overlook on the hike up of Herriman, Utah and the Kennecot Mine to the left. You can see the tiny parking lot strip where you started.

There are plenty of great spots to snap photos, with the Oquirrh Mountains rising in the background. I’d definitely come back when I’m in the area!

We only hiked up about 2 miles. It was quite muddy, so we turned around on a nice overlook.
